New treatment pathways
In the past 25 years more and more treatment have been come available for persons with MS. Currently, inflammation in the brains (neuroinflammation) can be stopped in a large group of patients. However the continues worsening (progression) remains present. Loss of nervous tissue (neurodegeneration) is not stopped with current medication. For this new biological disease pathways must be discovered and targeted medication should be developed.
Customized treatment
Currently, the treatment of MS is a search for the right medicine for each patient. Every situation is different. MS is therefore also called the disease with a thousand faces. A treatment specifically tailored to each individual to stop the disease processes that are currently underway in that person, without serious side effects. That is what we want to achieve by drawing up individual patient profiles.
From big data to patient profile
This requires as accurate as possible insight into and information about the course of MS in as many people with this condition as possible. This requires a lot of data to be collected, much more than is currently available. We collect this data ourselves from our patients, but we also collaborate with MS centers worldwide. The data of our own patients must always be maintained to maintain its value.
We also remain an important partner in international collaborations. All this data allows us to better assess which disease processes cause damage to the nervous system per individual. The disease processes are measured, among other things, using data in blood and MRI images. This is how an individual patient profile is created.
